Anyone who buys—or currently owns—a Polestar 2 electric vehicle (EV) will now be able to charge their car for free at Electrify America stations for two years. Polestar announced the new deal today, saying that Polestar 2 owners can start getting free 30-minute charge sessions late this month.

Polestar 2 owners will receive a unique enrollment code that they can use on the Electrify America mobile app. Owners who don't get a code can get one from their Polestar Space, which is the company's name for the branded "retail environments." There are around two dozen Polestar Spaces in the United States today. New Polestar 2 buyers will get their code when they take delivery of their new vehicle.

"We are thrilled to announce this offer for current and future Polestar 2 owners, streamlining the EV ownership experience for our customers," said Gregor Hembrough, head of Polestar North America, in a statement. "Polestar is working continuously to provide customers with substantial new benefits throughout their ownership journey. This offer takes the stress and costs out of charging your Polestar 2."

For years, partners between automakers and charge station operators like Electrify America have been common in the EV space. Electrify America has offered two- or three-year free charging deals for EV drivers from many automakers, including Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Jeep, and Volkswagen. Nissan also offered two years of free charging at EVGo stations for new Leaf buyers and now offers a $250 charging credit instead.

While most EV charging takes place at home, programs like these can help people interested in making the switch to electric drive. For years, the number-one issue has been so-called "range anxiety," even though the average American drives around 40 miles a day. Giving new EV drivers the security blanket of knowing they can charge for free at an entire network of stations is a relatively low-cost way to get them to plug in instead of gas up. And, after two years, many of them are likely to realize that they don't use those public stations as much as they might have expected.

The Polestar 2 is the brand's first all-electric model. The sleek sedan offers 408 horsepower and a range of up to 265 miles. The EV starts at $45,900, before any incentives, and now comes with an added charging bonus.
