Dubai: Qatar is of strategic importance to Huawei Digital Power Company and the company will continue to strengthen its presence in the country, a senior official of the company has said.

“In the Huawei Digital Power Company, we focus on five areas of business-smart PV, data center facility, mPower for electric vehicles, site power and integrated energy solutions,” Charles Yang, SVP of Huawei and President of Global Marketing Sales and Services at Huawei Digital Power told speaking on the sidelines media roundtable at the ongoing GITEX Global exhibition in Dubai.

“The GCC region is of strategic importance to Huawei Digital Power Company. We will have cooperation of business in all these five domains in this region. However, I believe two of them are even more important. The first one is SmartPV, the solar power and energy storage systems, because this is an area where there is huge strength in this region and the second is data center facility,” he said.

Yang said that this is the region with the longest sunlight hours in the world, 2500 hours per year. So there are great opportunities for large-scale deployment of PV and energy storage systems in the massive land and deserts. The company has established strategic partnerships with many companies in this region, such as ACWA from Saudi Arabia. It is supporting their deployment of such systems, not only in the region, but also globally.

Datacenter facility is an important domain for the company. Due to the developments in cloud and in digital sovereignty, many countries have accelerated the construction of data center facilities.

“Now, Huawei holds over 70 percent of the market share of DC facility in the Middle East. Over the past two years, we have worked together with a strategic customer of ours and rolled out a DC facility of 100 MW in just 2 years, using our pre-fabricated DC modules. Traditionally, DC construction would take, on average, 24 months, but now we can do the same in 6 to 9 months,”

said Yang.

“In the digital power domain, our goal is to build a digital power cloud that covers the end-to-end process of the power industry, from generation to transmission, distribution, and consumption, using big data technologies to help our customers and partners to improve energy efficiency, and ultimately build a low-carbon society,” he added.

Huawei strives to provide green, environmentally-friendly and low-carbon data center solutions to its customers, to not only help them satisfy the requirements to host the data locally, but also to contribute to a greener society.

Charles Yang emphasised that there is huge potential in the renewable energy, especially solar power. “There are lots of resources in the Middle East region for renewable energy. For example, the sunlight hours in the region is the longest in the world, almost 2500 hours a year. And there is massive land with deserts that are suitable for the deployment of PV panels. And as technology is developed, we are now looking at a cost of solar power of $0.013 to $0.014 per kilowatt hour, which is 5 to 10 times lower than fossil fuel,” he explained.

“In the Middle East, if we’re able to combine the solar PV energy storage systems with ultra-high voltage transmission technologies, GCC countries can become a hub of power generation that supplies a radius of 3,000 to 4,000  kilometers. And that means covering not only Middle East, but also Europe, Africa, and Asia. That is going to be significant for the region, as important even as the second oil economy. Personally, I am very excited about this idea,” Yang added.

He said that many countries have proposed their timeline to achieve carbon neutrality. "But to be able to deliver that goal, we need to build electric systems based on new kinds of power sources, such as solar power. However, these kinds of power sources like solar power are intermittent, and therefore, they fluctuate," he added.
