In Brazil, the Rio press office has announced a waste-to-energy pilot plant that produces biogas and fertilizer was recently installed in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The press office said the plant is located at the municipal company of urban cleaning (Comlurb) in the Caju neighborhood.
Information released by the Rio press office indicates the pilot project has been operational for approximately one month and is able to extract 100 to 150 cubic meters of biogas per ton of feedstock processed, with a 50 to 60 percent methane concentration. The facility can process an estimated 30 tons of feedstock per day.
Technology used at the pilot plant was developed by the Federal University of Minas Gerais, in partnership with Methanum Tecnologia Ambiental and Comlurb. Funding was provided by the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES).
According to the press office, the facility consists of modules that are approximately the same size as a shipping container. These modules receive waste and are sealed for two to three weeks. Bacteria introduced into the compartment via a spray system degrade organic matter and produce methane. The resulting biogas is stored while the remaining material is removed and used as fertilizer. The press office also noted that the system employs electronics, sensors and meters that help control and optimize biogas production. The plant also has a generator to produce electricity using the biogas produced.
